Blazing Saddles – Participatory Show

Blazing Saddles was originally created as a participatory show, so the possibilities for community engagement run through its veins & have evolved in a number of ways, including a creative workshop model, rehearsal only or a flash mob model.

Each performance is unique, working to the ages, abilities & strengths of participants, & responding to a wide range of performance locations.

Following Blazing Saddles’ core structure, the show’s scenes unfold across a series of locations along a 6-7km route, with a supported bike ride in between.

The ride offers opportunities to explore new areas for performance & further the show’s narratives. It is designed to encourage & support people to ride on the roads, at a relaxed & sociable pace, with a picnic en route. Audiences can either ride along or meet the show at locations along the way.

Workshop Models

Creative Workshop Model
Over two days, up to 20 participants learn to dance with their bikes, exploring the possibilities & creating their own moves whilst learning the show choreography & rehearsing in situ.  The emphasis in this workshop is on fun & sociability

Rehearsals Only
Learning the show choreography in two three hour workshops, for example, on the evening before & morning of the performance.  For up to 20 participants.

Flash mobs
A two hour workshop on the morning of performances to create a flash mob section for a group of ‘plain clothes’ performers to join in the show & encourage the audience to join in.

Picnic
Mid way through the ride, performers & audience stop for a picnic, a hot cuppa & delicious cake.  A chance to catch up, have a break & meet everyone.

Short film: What People Said…

‘I met new people, enjoyment, pushing myself, attention, laughter, fond memories & I learned new things.’

‘A great atmosphere at rehearsals & because we were all volunteers it felt like there was no pressure.’

‘Increased bike confidence. Enjoyed performing… way better than going to the gym.’
